Shah Rukh Khan’s Bold Statement on the Soft Drink Ads, “Why Should I Stop if the Government Doesn’t Stop Earning.?”

In a year of 2006 interview Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan defended his involvement in soft drink advertisements with a straightforward statement. His words recently resurfaced and gone viral, shed light on a long standing debate about celebrity endorsements and their societal impact.


What Happened.?

Bollywood Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan known for his endorsing several major soft drink brands faced criticism at the time. Many peoples believed it was inappropriate for a role model like him to promote products considered harmful to health. Critics argued that such endorsements could negatively influence to the younger generations.


Shah Rukh Khan’s Response

When questioned rise, Shah Rukh didn’t shy away from addressing the issue. He stated,

“If the government doesn’t stop to earning from the soft drinks, then why should I stop advertising them.? I’m an actor and advertising is part of my job. If something is harmful, it’s production should be banned not it’s advertisements. Whether it’s cigarettes or soft drinks the government benefits from their sales. If these are truly harmful then stop their manufacturing and sale entirely.”

Shah Rukh emphasised the need for transparency and consistency in policies pointing out that banning ads while allowing harmful products to be sold made little sense.

Public Reaction

Shah Rukh’s statement triggered mixed reactions on public. While some peoples supported his logic and other ones argued that celebrities have a moral responsibility to choose their endorsements very carefully. Critics maintained that a public figures should avoid promoting such a potentially harmful products given their influence on the society.

This resurfaced controversy reignites the discussion on the ethical responsibilities of celebrities in advertising those of products. Should they prioritise public health over commercial interests.? Or is it the government’s role to regulate the production and sale of harmful products instead of holding celebrities accountable.?
